Coaching Football Cornerback Mentality

Anyone who’s designed or implemented a defense, at any level, knows one of the toughest decisions is deciding what the Linebacker reads should be. Options for linebacker reads include: one offensive lineman (most commonly a Guard); one offensive back; multiple offense linemen; or multiple offensive backs. There are many other variations, particularly for specialty offenses. An example of this would be coaches reading the butt of the Quarterback vs. a Wing-T. In order to be successful, it is necessary for linebackers to read more than one player or action in …

College Football – Coaching Musical Chairs

The film world was saddened this holiday season with news of the passing of Ann Savage – perhaps the original Femme Fatale. ‘Femme Fatale’ roughly interpreted, stands for ‘Fatal Woman.’ Get too close and you lose your good judgment, get whacked or at least seriously embarrassed. Using the universal laws of attraction, the standard methodology includes luring unsuspecting folks to listen to seductive language and in the end, cause some really poor decisions. As college football heads into the annual period of depression known as winter, some programs will be …

Coaching Youth Football – Lessons Learned from Other Sports

Lessons Learned From Other Sports Some lessons learned in coaching youth football have really helped me in coaching other sports I know very little about. In 2002 the Screaming Eagles Youth Football Program decided we would start a baseball program. The problem was I had not coached baseball before and over 90% of our kids had never put a glove on, as baseball popularity has declined dramatically in the inner-city. Since we had been able to completely turn around our football program from the bottom of the league to the …

Glasgow Rangers Football Club

The 1919/20 season heralded the dawn of a new era for Glasgow Rangers as manager William Wilton and number two William Struth initiated a Glasgow Rangers dominance that was to last until the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939. Though winning this season with 31 wins out of 42 games and scoring 106 goals, it was overshadowed by the subsequent death of manager, William Wilton. William Wilton When the Scottish League was formed in 1890, Wilton became its first treasurer as Glasgow Rangers shared the title with Dumbarton. …

A Football Player’s Perspective – How to Make It to the Next Level of Play

It was August 2003 and my team at the time, the Pittsburgh Steelers, was holding the first live scrimmage for training camp. As a rookie in the NFL I had practiced a number of times with the team, but this was the first time I was going to suit it up for a “full contact and tackle goal line scrimmage”. The set up was easy. The first and second team offenses would go against the first and second team defenses. The offense had four downs to score a touchdown. If …

A Story From The Stands – What Have Former Nebraska Football Players Learned From The Game – Janssen

THE BALLAD OF AN UNSUNG HERO If you are a devout Husker fan, get out your tape of the 1972 National Championship game with Alabama. Fast foreword to the last play of the first quarter and you’ll find Johnny Rodgers galloping down the field for a 77 yard Nebraska touchdown. Watch carefully as the wall forms and three Husker defensive linemen take out seven Alabama players and spring Johnny for another of his famous “put ‘em in the aisles” runs. But today isn’t Johnny’s day. It belongs to one of …
