Will Spain Win the 2010 World Cup?

 Advertisment

Spain are known as the “almost” team, because they always fall at the last hurdle. After coming close on so many occasions, and having great players on paper, Spain finally won the 2008 European Championship, beating Germany. Can they repeat their performance, and be champions of the world as well?

Here’s why they might.

1. Spain have got one of the best goalkeepers in the world in Casillas, and his understudy Valdes is almost as competent. With plenty of experience at the highest level, these goalkeepers are highly dependable and good shot stoppers.

2. Sergio Busquets of Barcelona is an overnight sensation, having gone from playing 3rd division football to playing in the national team in just 9 months. He’s a defensive midfielder, who can also play central or attacking midfield too. As a very versatile player, he’ll play an important role in Spain’s quest to be world champions.

3. Juan Mata, the Valencia winger, is good on the ball and a great finisher. He’s already scored against Real Madrid and Barcelona. He can play on wither wing and behind the strikers, and del Bosque will be looking to get the best out of him in South Africa.

4. Arteta is well known to those who follow a Premier League team. He’s an exciting and very skillful player who can create goals as well as score them.

5. Striker Dani Guiza might be the wildcard member of the squad, although he’s playing well this season. Whether he has a part to play is down to the manager.

6. David Villa is reckoned to be one of the top forwards in the world at the moment, and his finishing and presence in front of goal, makes him a formidable striker. No wonder he’s always linked to the other top European clubs.

7. Torres is a legend on Merseyside already, and it was his goal that won the European Championships in 2008. Even though he’s been injured for a lot of the season, he’s deadly in front of goal when he’s fit. If he can last the whole tournament, he and Spain could go all the way.

8. If Fabregas returns from his leg injury in time, then he adds another important strength to the Spanish side. He’s equally at home starting or finishing moves, and loves to score.

9. With a relatively easy group of Switzerland, Honduras and Chile, Spain will be looking to win their group, and get to the knockout stages without any drama.

10. Spain will definitely want to prove that they can repeat their performance in the European Championships at the World Cup too. With the likes of Fabregas, Villa, and Torres, they should get at least as far as the semi finals.

Now you know more about their squad and their chances, do you think that Spain could win the 2010 World Cup?
