If you’re looking for style, and flair, then Italy are probably your team. Here’s why they might win the World Cup in South Africa.
1. The team is mainly comprised of older yet vastly experienced players, who have played at the highest level for years. They are also the current holders of the World Cup, having won the last competition in 2006.
2. Lippi is a good manager, and knows how to get the best out of his players, especially in a tournament situation. It’s hard to overstate he importance of a good manager in a World Cup.
3. Buffon is a good goalkeeper with plenty of international and Champion’s League experience, and can be relied on when under pressure. Although he might be busy in a game, he doesn’t lose concentration, and rarely makes mistakes.
4. Captain Cannavaro is a well respected defender with plenty of experience, and will be looking forward to the World Cup. Zambrotta, although probably past his best is still cool and calm under pressure in defence, and won’t want to concede many goals.
5. De Rossi is and exciting young central midfielder and will want to impress at this tournament. Gattusso is a midfielder who operates in either a 3 or 4 man midfield and has plenty of experience and skill to ensure that the strikers get the ball
6. Pirlo is a solid dependable central midfielder who is essential to the team, and will looking to have a good tournament. Aquilani, who plays for Liverpool, is another central midfielder who can score goals.
7. The veteran striker Luca Toni might be a surprise choice to go to South Africa this year. Rossi, who has a famous surname in Italian football, will hopefully be on the score sheet several times this year. Gilardino currently has a better strike rate than Luca Toni, and might be favourite to start.
8. It’s foolish to write off Italy. With a history of fantastic defenders, such as Paulo Maldini and Franco Baresi, Italy are hard to break down, and you can never write them off. On their day Italy are brilliant to watch, and will want to do as well as last time.
9. Italy are the second most successful team ever in the World Cup, behind Brazil, and have won the competition 4 times, so will definitely want to win a 5th and match Brazil.
10. With the spotlight on the current world champion, and seemingly easy group games against New Zealand, Paraguay and Slovakia, Italy should be firm favourites to get to at least the semi finals.
Now you know more about the Italian squad, and their chances, do you think Italy can win the 2010 World Cup?
