Abu Dhabi has hosted many world class events for a number of sports including cricket, grand prix, tennis, golf and now football. Most recent is the FIFA club world cup which is being played at Zayed Sports City and Mohammed Bin Zayed stadiums. Top club teams have arrived in Abu Dhabi for this tournament. Names like Barcelona FC, Atlanta FC, Auckland City FC, Pohang Steelers FC and TP Mazembo are in Abu Dhabi to take part in these matches. While the spectators can expect to watch in action the players like Xavi Hernandez, Rafael Marquez, Kim Gi-Dong, Federico Vilar, Horacio Peralta, Thiery Henry, Leandro Desabato and Keryn Jordan. Last year Manchester United won the World Cup with Liga De Quito ending as runner up. Barcelona, who will be playing their final against Estudiantes, is the strongest contenders this time around.
Sports Events and Tourism:
Main motive behind hosting these world class events is to give a substantial boost to their tourism industry. Abu Dhabi has adapted a multi-faceted but careful approach to establish itself as one of the major cities in the world. Some huge developments like Sadiyaat Island are in progress, major sports events are taking place. Then there’s some display of their financial strength, you can gauge the extent of their economy by (out of the blue) bailout of $10 billion for Dubai, which is huge especially in perspective of worldwide financial crunch. All in all, Abu Dhabi seems much more in control when compared to the haphazardness that we can see in other parts of the world.
In addition to its positive impacts on Abu Dhabi reputation, football world cup is an anticipated event in UAE, since football is one of those very few sports which are popular among the emirate citizens (cricket is also popular but most of its fan base consists of expatriates). The event has been pretty successful so far, FIFA officials are impressed with the preparation, especially the FIFA president Joseph S. Blatter, who expressed his satisfaction in these words “The president Mohammed Khalfan Al-Rumaithi was being too humble when he said they will do better next year. It is not possible, because the organizational skill, premises, stadiums, hospitality, media arrangements, transport and everything has been the best. I can only congratulate the government of Abu Dhabi.”. Similar admiration and compliments were being made by players and officials of the visiting teams.
