2009 UEFA Cup

 Advertisment

The UEFA Cup is a football competition for European club teams, organized by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA).

Replacing the Inter-cities Fairs Cup in 1971, the 2008/09 season will be the last for the UEFA Cup, before changing format to become the UEFA Europa League. After the UEFA Champions League, it is the next most important European competition for men’s club teams. In order to qualify for the tournament, clubs are judged on their performance in national leagues as well as national cup competitions.

The 2008/09 UEFA Cup final will be played on May 20, 2009 at Sukru Sarcoglu Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey. Istanbul will be only the 12th city to host the UEFA Cup final since becoming a one-off event in the 1997/98 season. The newly-named UEFA Europa League will see it’s first championship at the HSH Nordbank Arena in Hamburg, Germany.
