The Fighting Irish Football Coaching Changes

 Advertisment

Notre Dame was founded by Edward Sorin back in 1842. Since he was a Roman Catholic he made the school a private Roman Catholic University. To date, there are over 30 Master Degree Programs as well as over 20 Doctoral Degree programs. Besides academics, Notre Dame is well known and highly regarded as a premier sports university. The “Fighting Irish” is a name that came into the school’s existence in the early 20′s. No other school has so much pride and honor over their program as much as Notre Dame does.

Notre Dame is currently 3rd for having the most wins in NCAA Football history, just shy of a few wins behind Michigan Wolverines & Texas Longhorns. Every Football program has their up and down years. The football program, as of late, has only been seeing clouds without the silver lining. Since Charlie Weiss was in control as head coach this football program has not fared very well nor done any better.

Recently, Charlie Weis was fired as head coach as he had 5 years to try and turn the program around. He was unable to do so. As of late, the Fighting Irish went after the head coach of Cincinnati, Brian Kelly. Coach Kelly took the Bearcats to an undefeated regular season with a 34-6 record. He was offered the position as head coach to replace Charlie Weis and accepted the offer without any hesitation. He will not be coaching his former team’s big bowl game appearance as he is preparing to make his transition. We will see if Brian Kelly will have a successful career as Lou Holtz did at Notre Dame. Lou was the head coach for 10 years from ’86 to ’96. For the 10 season that he was there, he holds an impressive record of 100 wins, 30 losses, and 2 ties! Overall, Lou Holtz’s career can be summed up with one undefeated season and 9 straight big bowl game appearances.
