Manchester United Football Club play at Old Trafford, Manchester and are one of the most recognised names in world football.
Club Heritage - Formed as Newton Heath L&YR F.C. in 1878 they changed their name to Manchester United in 1902. They also changed their strip from green and gold to the red and white colours that they wear today.
One of the club’s most famous managers in the 20th Century was Matt Busby. He became manager in 1945 and led them to league championship titles in 1952,1956,1957. They became the first English club to play in the European Cup and reached the semi-finals where they were beaten by the Spanish team Real Madrid.
The Munich Air Disaster- In 1958 tragedy struck. The team were travelling back from a European Cup match in Munich when their plane crashed on take off. Eight of the team were killed. Matt Busby survived and set about rebuilding his team. They won the FA Cup in 1963 and league titles in 1665 and 1967. Then in 1968 Manchester United won the European Cup beating Benfica 4 – 1 in the final at Wembley becoming the first ever English Club to win the competition.
Treble Winning Year - One of the most memorable years in the club’s recent history was 1999 when they won the treble – the Premier League, the FA Cup and the European Champions League. The Champions League Final was played at the Nou Camp, Barcelona where Manchester United famously came back from 1-0 down to beat Bayern Munich 2-1 with an injury time winner.
In 2008 they again won the Champions League beating Chelsea 6-5 on penalties after playing out a 1-1 draw in Moscow.
Manchester United are the most successful ever Premier League club having won the title an incredible 11 times since it was formed in the 1992/93 season under the leadership of manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
