Baseball is known as “the national pastime” of the people of the US. A recent study has found that at least in TV ratings the matches of National Football League (NFL) rank higher than other matches including those of Baseball league. This trend is reflected on the internet also. The websites to watch football online easily outnumber that for other games. One season of NFL lasts 17 weeks. The matches are available on many channels of cable TV and satellite TV. Also, these matches are available on the internet, through legal and not so legal means.

Trends In Watching Football Online

NFL was established in 1920. But like other sports leagues around the world, the advent of live TV telecast brought big money into the league. Today, TV companies offer astronomical amount for getting the telecast rights of the matches of the league. The live streaming through the internet so far has not reached television-like proportions. But the number of people who watch football online has been steadily on the rise.

At present, there are six television channels that have telecasting rights of matches in various regions. CBS, Fox, NBC, ESPN, and the NFL Network are the cable TV channels that telecast NFL matches. A satellite TV broadcasting company called DirecTV has the rights for satellite telecast of these matches. DirecTV provides software facility to watch football online in a pay per view arrangement.

There are websites that provide live videos of TV programs. On these websites one can watch football matches being telecasted on various channels. There are also websites that utilize what is called peer to peer streaming technology. There are copyright issues associated with certain kind of streaming using this technology. Sometimes, these platforms tend to be less reliable also. The official website of the NFL does not provide facility to watch football online. But the website does simulcast (virtual telecast with the help of animation and simulation) the matches.

The NFL season would seem incomplete nowadays without the presence of Fantasy Football. When you play fantasy football, you have become the owner and coach of a football team. It is hard to remember what a NFL game was like without every play having fantasy football implications.

As the owner, you can assemble a team of stars and role players, attempting to find the right balance of players to accumulate stats to score well in your league. As the team’s coach, you attempt to pick the right starting lineup for that week’s games, making sure that your best players aren’t sitting on the bench and you are not starting any player that is Out due to an injury or Bye week.

For anyone interested in starting a league, all you need are a few basic guidelines to get started. The beauty of fantasy football is that there really isn’t any set set up that you are required follow. It’s your fantasy league, so design it any way you want. Of course, you are limited to the creativity of the website that you have chosen.

Your league may prefer to play in a free, generic league. You will have many websites to choose from for that. On the other hand, you may want to full-service website with many flexible configuration options and dedicated customer service personnel. If that describes your league, you will want to look at Maximum Fantasy Sports. Ultimately, to enhance your NFL viewing experience, participating in a fantasy football league at MFS, or elsewhere, will allow you to do that. Okay, now let’s take it step by step and get you started. Bear in mind, this article would look like War and Peace if we covered every single nuance of fantasy football, so we are going to focus on the highlights.

Gather Friends to Fill out a League

Assemble a league of football owners who are willing to participate through the end of your fantasy season. It makes it more enjoyable if they are willing to wheel and deal, wager a little money and talk a bit of smack. There is no set number of teams per league, but 12 teams seem to be the standard. You can certainly form leagues that are bigger and smaller than that, but make sure that you have an even-number of teams if you are playing in a head-to-head league as no one wants to take a week off. If you are playing in a Total Points league with no direct matchups, an odd number of teams is acceptable.

Decide who’s Running the Show

Elect a commissioner. The commissioner should be somebody who every team owner respects, or at least trusts. The commissioner, who most likely also owns a team in the league, is responsible for the league constitution, bylaws, configuration and all final decisions. The commissioner also collects and distributes the league contributions and maintains the peace. A good website will grant the commissioner a set of tools that allow him/her with the power to control what functions the owners are allowed to perform (managing their roster, posting messages), to manage another owner’s roster, rerun stats and many other controlling functions.

Configuring the League

Setting the scoring system and rules for your league are very important. There are many variations to the game and scoring systems for fantasy football are as different as the NFL and Arena Football Leagues. Make sure all rules and settings are set in stone before the draft is held. This article could go one for many, many pages just discussing the variety of different scoring configuration options available in fantasy football. Let’s take a peek at the most basic settings.

Ultimately, it all comes down to how scoring is set up. Though many early leagues focused simply on touchdowns, most leagues nowadays award points for touchdowns and yardag. Four points are commonly awarded to any player who throws a touchdown pass and six points for rushing or receiving touchdowns. One point is commonly awarded for every 25 passing yards and every 10 rushing or receiving yards. It is tempting to go with the feast-or-famine approach and draft a QB and his main WR. Often, this is a bad idea, unless, of course, you have Tom Brady and Randy Moss on your fantasy team. Some leagues also give bonus points for longer TDs, such as, two points for TDs between 50 and 81 yards and three points for TDs over 81 yards.

The size of rosters also varies from league to league. Most leagues have a fixed number of starting positions and a fixed number of bench players, usually adding up to 15-17 players. The starting positions (slots) usually feature one QB, two RBs, three WRs, one TE, one K and one D. Variations include using Special Teams or individual defensive players instead of a single defense. Also, "swing" positions are becoming more prevalent. These are also known as "flex" positions. This slot allows for more than one position. The swing positions often used are a combination of WR/TE or RB/WR, though there are a handful of others. In the end, the accumulated points of one team’s starters are matched up against the points of another team’s starters and the end result is either a victory or a loss.

Occasionally, a tie will sneak its way into the picture. A good website will give you the option of breaking ties during the regular season. Tie-breakers are mandatory should they occur during the playoffs.

Set the Schedule

The website should generate the league schedule after the draft is complete using the divisional structure the commissioner has established. League schedules are generally set up so teams in the same division play each other more often than other divisions. Ultimately, it is ideal to have a balanced schedule. Before the draft, the playoff schedule needs to be determined. This will vary depending on how many teams are in your league and how many teams the commissioner chooses to make the playoffs. The championship game needs to be scheduled between two teams no later than week 17 of the NFL season. One common choice is to finish the fantasy football regular season in week 13 or 14 and allow 6 teams to make the playoffs. This will grant the top 2 teams a playoff Bye, thus awarding them for their performance in the regular season. No one likes to dominate the regular season and then lose out in the first week of the playoffs.

Drafting your Players

Rosters are filled out by running a player draft. The draft order is randomized by the commissioner or the website. Unlike the NFL draft, fantasy football drafts are normally run serpentine style. For instance, in a 12-team league, the draft order would be 1 through 12, with the 12th team having the first pick of the second round and going back up in reverse order. In that scenario, the first team to pick wouldn’t select again until the 24th pick, but would then start the third round with the 25th selection, should they not fall asleep during the lull. Should this happen, the draft control will make the selection for the snoozing owner.

Drafts can be held online or offline. If held online, drafts are normally held real-time so each owner can make their choices based on how the draft is evolving. This can be a bit time-consuming, so another option is to run an automated draft. An increasingly popular draft method is having a fixed budget and bidding on players to fill out a roster.

Maintaining your Roster

Throughout the season, you will need to change players out in an effort to manage injuries, Bye weeks or address weak areas by trading from areas of strength. Teams can trade and pick up free agents until the end of the season, unless there are deadlines established for these actions. Trades tend to have some sort of approval process in place to assure the league that trades are considered fair. The approval process generally falls on the shoulders of the commissioner to make a decision or upon the owners in the league to submit a vote (majority rules).

When it comes to free agents, it is com
mon for leagues to apply a waiver system. True free agents can be acquired without application of any rules. Players attempted to be acquired that are in waiver status have to flow through waiver processing to determine which team will be awarded the player. There are a number of waiver processing rules.

The most common is a rolling priority list. This is initially established in the reverse order of the draft order and then gets adjusted as teams acquire players in waiver status. The team with the lowest waiver priority number is awarded the player desired when waiver processing occurs. When that processing happens, the team’s waiver priority is then set to the highest number and all teams between have their number adjusted down by one. Other waiver processing options allow teams to bid on free agents, award a player on waivers to the team with the worst record among acquiring teams or have made the least numbers of transactions.

Making your Push to the Championship

It is very difficult to make the playoffs, let alone the Championship game, in a fantasy football league without devoting a lot of time to the game, making wise draft and transaction choices and having your players stay healthy. You have no control over the latter, so your team must be equipped to handle devastating injuries, should they occur.

- The common draft rule is to back up your studs. If you have LaDainian Tomlinson, grab his backup in the draft as well. If you have Peyton Manning, grab his backup in the draft. It is a tough choice as Peyton does not get hurt, but, should it happen, would you feel more comfortable with his backup in your lineup, an untested rookie or the Jets QB?

- Another common sense rule is to not draft injury-prone players or running backs over 30 too early. It is hard to justify the reward over the risk. Drafting Deuce McAlister in the 4th round last year in many leagues was a season killer when Adrian Peterson was still available. Out of all the positions, rookies make the biggest impact in the running back category.

- The most important rule is to know your league settings. Be aware of the scoring system, waiver processing rules and all deadlines. You cannot build a balanced team unless you know how to balance the scoring across the starting positions on your team.

Once you have that accomplished, you want to review your team at the midpoint of your season and evaluate what it will look like in the playoff weeks. If you have some players that you feel may be looking at getting some rest, it is best to trade them before the trade deadline to ensure that your roster is as strong as possible during the playoffs. It is difficult to gauge how much a player will play in weeks 13-17 far in advance, but it is a big risk to go into the playoff battle with players who may sit after one half.

One alternative to that is to utilize a fantasy football feature offered by one site; Maximum Fantasy Sports. This feature is In-Game player changes. This feature can be used all season or have it turned on at a certain point in the season, such as, the first week of playoffs. Configuration of this feature allows an owner to swap in different, unplayed players at their respective positions. So, if Joseph Addai is scheduled to play the first half of Indy’s week 15 game and you have Kenton Keith on your bench, you could swap out Addai for the second half and swap in Keith to maximize performance at your running back slot.

End of the Season Reflection

I hope you spend your off-season gloating about your team’s dominance. No matter how your season ends, you want to review what went wrong and what went right during your season so you can improve the following year. Also, take notes on little used players that showed a lot of promise as the season went on. In the off-season, pay attention to free agency and the NFL draft. Note which teams improved in skill areas that may result in new starters that you can draft in later rounds in your upcoming fantasy football draft. Though the NFL season ends in February, fantasy football is a year-round fixation.

If you have cable TV connection you can watch the cable TV channels in the respective regions. You can watch the game of any region with DirecTV if you have taken its subscription.

Other Ways To Watch Live Football

NFL addicts who do not have access to television when a game is going on can watch live football on the computer if they have a TV tuner card installed on the computer. However, for this also, you need to have cable or terrestrial connection.

People who travel frequently may not have much use from a TV tuner card. But they also can watch live football if they have a laptop that can be connected to the internet. The satellite channel that telecasts the program “Sunday Night Ticket” provides this program online too. But you need to pay a fee for watching the game.

One can also watch NFL games live through the websites that provide television channels through the internet. The fee for registering on such websites is comparatively low. You need to check whether the website provides live feeds of CBS, Fox, NBC, ESPN, and the NFL Network. If these channels are not in the list of channels, you will not be able to watch live football. Then there is a way that is less reliable and hard to find. Some websites offer live streaming of sports action using peer to peer technology. The copyright issues for this kind of streaming videos are yet to be properly addressed.

The Premier League, also affectionately known as The Premiership, is the pride of football in the United Kingdom. The league is relatively young and was formed in response to the decline of the sport in UK during the 1980s. Football stadiums were being neglected and English football clubs were banned from competition in Europe as a result of the disaster that occurred during the 1985 European Cup Tournament at Heysel Stadium in Brussels. The Football League First Division, which had been the major English football league since 1888, lagged well behind its Italian and Spanish rivals and numerous top English players chose to play abroad.

Around the early 1990s, things begin to turn around as England successfully reached the semi-finals in the 1990 FIFA World Cup. And Europe’s governing body of football, UEFA, lifted the five year ban on European competitions in that same year. The league has seen an explosion in growth and is currently the most watched sporting league in the world.

In February of 1992, The FA Premier League was formed and the first games were played in August of the same year. Originally, there were 22 clubs in league. However, currently there are 22 teams in the league. The FA Premier League’s name was officially changed to the The Premier League in 2007. The league is also known as Barclays Premier League since its official sponsor is Barclays Bank. Currently the league is at the top of the English football league system and at the end of the 2007-2008 season had completed 16 seasons of football.

The Premier League’s football seasons run from August to May and each team plays a total of 38 games. Over the years, a total of 40 football clubs have participated in The Premier League. However, of the 40 teams that have competed in The Premier League, only 4 have won the UK Premiership title – those teams include Manchester United, Blackburn Rovers, Arsenal, and Chelsea. The current football champion is Manchester United who holds the record of winning the most Premiership titles – Manchester United boasts a total of 10 UK Premiership titles.

The Premier League is structured as a corporation with the 20 participating football clubs holding interest in the league. Each participating club in The Premiership is treated as a shareholder and is entitled to one vote on the issues such as contracts and rule changes. The chairman, chief executive, and board of directors oversee daily operations of The Premier League are elected by the shareholders. Though the Football Association is not involved directly in the daily operations, it is treated a special shareholder and holds the power of veto during the election of the chief executive and chairman whenever new rules are put in place by the league.

The UK Premiership is wildly popular throughout the world and owes much of its success to media coverage of football sporting events. The decision in 1992 to assign broadcasting rights to BSkyB has paid off enormously. Over a half a billion people follow the league and it is particularly popular in Asia, where it is the most widely promoted sports program.

With growth and statistics like these, it seems The Premier League has stumbled upon a golden formula. As long as they continue to refine and improve it, The Premiership should continue to bask in success for years to come.

National Football League (NFL) is one of the most keenly followed sports leagues in the USA. According to some estimates, the live telecast of NFL on various television sports channels is the most popular television sports program in the country.

The world of sports is currently driven by television rights. Selling television rights is a major source of revenue for all sports leagues in the world. National Football League (NFL) of the USA is also no exception to this phenomenon. In fact, NFL games are packaged in a number of ways through various media. Several surveys have shown that NFL games are the most keenly anticipated television broadcasts. NFL Sunday Ticket is a kind of repackaging the games through a satellite television channel. Its aim is to allow people who do not have access to cable TV networks to watch these games live.

What Is NFL Sunday Ticket

The deal for television rights of NFL is a lucrative opportunity for television networks. The television rights of NFL are not given to a single television channel throughout the USA. It is given to various television broadcasting companies in different regions. The structure of the league suits such a distribution. In the league, first there are league games in two conferences: American Football Conference and National Football Conference. Then there are playoffs in which top twelve teams of the leagues participate. Then there is the final called the Super Bowl.

The telecast rights of different regions are given to different television companies. CBS, FOX, NBC, ESPN, and the NFL Network are among the television companies that provide live telecast of NFL matches of various regions. This results in a scenario in which people who reside outside their home state may not be able to watch their home team’s action. NFL Sunday Ticket is for such people.

Currently DirecTV, a satellite television program provider, has the rights for NFL Sunday Ticket. This television channel is not available through cable network. One should have subscription of DirecTV for watching the games. Matches can be watched on the internet also on a pay per view basis.

often an American professional football league attempts to challenge the might of the National Football League and they inevitably fail. The World Football League tried to compete by featuring games played in Europe during the Fall and that only last a season or two. Probably the most notable of all of the NFL challengers was the United States Football League otherwise known as the USFL. With high profile owners such as Donald Trump and future NFL Hall of Fame talent such as quarterback Jim Kelly the USFL looked like it may give the NFL a run for its money. But after three years and millions of dollars of debt the USFL folded up shop and left the NFL standing alone once again. A few years ago wrestling billionaire Vince McMahon tried his hand at professional football and started the Xtreme Football League or the XFL. McMahon did not try and compete head to head with the NFL as his league played during the summer months but the specter of the NFL loomed large over the XFL and the XFL television ratings plummeted to the point where McMahon closed down his league after only one season. Now enters the United Football League otherwise know as the UFL. With a flashy logo and league colors that look much like the color scheme of the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks the UFL announced recently that it will begin play in October of 2009 which will put it squarely in competition with the NFL. It is a four team league with franchises in Las Vegas, New York, Orlando and Sacramento that has many skeptics already signing the bankruptcy papers for UFL commissioner Michael Huyghue. But the reported death of the UFL may be premature when you look at the way they are going about structuring their league and when you consider their timing. The UFL is taking a similar approach to the USFL in that it is attempting to employ personnel that football fans will recognize. The UFL franchises do not even have names yet but they do have some very high profile head coaches. Former NFL head coach and coordinator Ted Cottrell will coach in New York, former head coach of the New York Giants Jim Fassel will coach in Las Vegas, very popular former NFL head coach Dennis Green will coach in San Francisco, and former head coach and NFL star player Jim Haslett will coach in Orlando. No one is certain what kind of players the UFL will start off with but there is obviously a plan in place to try and pull some talent from the NFL and the NFL owners may be the ones supplying the talent directly to the UFL. In 2011 the NFL collective bargaining agreement runs out and the NFL owners have threatened to lock the players out until the dispute is resolved. If the UFL manages to survive until 2011, and add a few more franchises, then there will be places for many of these NFL stars to play if there is a lock out. Would that be enough to keep that NFL caliber talent in the UFL? The owners of the new league are counting on it.

If you come from a large family you have probably played backyard football many times and you can relate to this story.

Being from a large family, we are close to each other and try to get together as often as possible. Over the years it seems that busy schedules and obligations cut into the amount of time we can spend together. When we do get together we play backyard football. This is something that we have done since we were children. On Sunday afternoons my mother would chase us outside after a large noon meal to run off energy. Two of my brother’s played football on the high school team so they always wanted to get in extra practice time. Our backyard football games were usually friendly and care was used not to get too rough with tackling. It seems as we are getting older, and have added in-laws into our games of backyard football, the play has gotten rougher.

A few weeks ago we were all together at my brother’s home for a barbecue. After we had eaten someone suggested that we play a game of backyard football. We split into teams and decided we would play the siblings against the in-laws. This was our first mistake. A great deal of time has passed since we played backyard football together as kids. I hate to admit it but we are all middle aged. However once the game of backyard football began it seemed like no time had passed since we were playing in our parents yard. We communicated well and soon the siblings had taken a commanding lead in the backyard football game.

Well, this was just too difficult for one of my brother in-laws to handle. He is one of those ultra competitive guys and was not happy to be on the losing team. When we next had the ball I noticed that he seemed to be tackling people with a lot of excessive force. One of my brothers’ noticed this also and told him to ease up. This seemed to make him even more determined to keep us from scoring. Soon the friendly backyard football game was getting very serious. One of my brothers passed the ball to my youngest sister. She caught it and started for the end zone. My brother-in-law tackled her from behind and fell with his full weight on her leg. She cried out in pain and dropped the ball.

One of my nieces is studying to be a doctor. She ran over to look at her aunt’s leg. She insisted that we take her to the hospital to have x-rays taken. My car was the closest so we loaded her in and went to the emergency room. The x-rays confirmed that she had broken a bone in her foot as well as her shin. As the doctor was setting her leg and putting on the cast she said that it would be fun to tell everyone how she had been hurt. After hearing the story though, she said we might want to think about playing an activity that was a little less physical, perhaps cards or something like that. While that didn’t seem to be what we wanted to hear at the time, we haven’t played backyard football again since that day.
